Jubilee Flotilla

The very best thing about the Jubilee was spending time with friends - new and old!  After the Holy Trinity Street Faire a group of us trooped over to Mary Steven's mother's flat to wish her a happy Jubilee.  We ended up staying and all watching the Jubilee Flotilla as broadcast on the BBC from London.
Katie, the Queen and Me!

I can hear my mother now - Nothing changes!  Beth used to do that when she was 5 years old!  Back up from the TV Beth.  You are going to ruin your eyes.
(I'm wearing my sunglasses because I forgot to bring my regular glasses on this outing and wasn't expecting to be inside again.)

Please pardon the fact that the following pictures are pictures of a television but I couldn't help myself.  It was all so amazingly grand.
View from the Queen's barge toward the Tower Bridge that was opened for the occasion.

Flags from all the Commonwealth countries sail past St. Paul's Cathedral.

The man-powered boats started things off - setting the pace of 4 knots for the entire 15 mile route!

Dunkirk boats pass Parliament and Big Ben.

And then there was the Queen's barge!  I think Victoria and QE the first would have been proud and felt right at home.  I have to give it to the Brits - they know how to do pomp and circumstance (and make it seem natural) better than anyone else in the world!

l to r: Queen Elizabeth II in white, Prince Harry in dark blue and a light blue beret, Prince Phillip waving and Prince William (white glove) turned away from the camera.

More Commonwealth flags for my mother to identify as she is a flag fanatic!

The Queen and Prince Phillip stood for the entire flotilla. The commentators kept commenting on how enthusiastic they both were.

 Got to love her!

This was our little international Jubilee Flotilla party
l to r back row:  Christoph (German), Kathleen (Scottish) and Andrew (English)
Mary's 94 year old mother decked out in a Union Jack pinafore (aka apron)
l to r front row:  Me (American) and Katie (Irish)

Thanks for the great memories everyone!

  1. Ah... Beth! How lovely!! It was a great afternoon and so lovely to have you all helping my mother to celebrate. (Not sure what Andrew would think about being tagged as English though... He's Scot through and through, from the same town as Kathleen and the same school and he and I wear the tartan of the same clan!)We just loved having you all there and my mother was delighted with it all. Thank you so much for coming round and spending the afternoon with her and me.
