Thursday night somebody in the building burnt their dinner and set off the fire alarm. We are still on semester break so there aren't many people here but those who are dutifully gathered on the safety mandated sidewalk to await the all clear.
In the little group near me were several other women from various European countries, the UK and the US. It was obvious that no flames were going to start shooting out of the second floor windows so we turned our anticipation to watching for the firetrucks and the Scottish firemen. Unfortunately, our anticipation had to dissipate on its own because, as one girl put it, "the UK doesn't share the firemen-are-studs stereotype."
Oh, well, another belated culture shock dealt with.
