Who'd a Thunk It and BBQ-palooooooza!

I never thought I'd do it but....

Yesterday not only did I leave my flat without a jacket, I didn't wear a sweater. In fact I had the sleeves of my dress shirt rolled up to my elbows - I was only wearing it because, it turns out, I didn't bring any short sleeve shirts with me. I wasn't wearing jeans or corduroy trousers either. I had on my short cotton skirt (no stockings) AND FLIP FLOPS!

Yes! It was almost 85 degrees here in our little patch of heaven yesterday - sunny all week as the temperature rose a bit everyday until Friday's culmination of absolute picture postcard perfection!

As if to celebrate all this God-given loveliness the PostGrad Committee had scheduled a BBQ from 5-8pm. I was thinking we'd get about 80 people - now, with the way the Roundel building is set up, getting 80 people in here would be a disaster if we couldn't use the backyard. I said a silent prayer every morning that the weather would hold. AND BOY DID IT! Straight through until 7:45pm when the sky began to sprinkle just enough to let you know it did still know how to precipitate but not enough to pull out an umbrella or raincoat.

This is Micah Snell (PhD candidate from Dallas) and his prized brisket! Micah and Brandon Craft spent all day smoking the beef (chicken and some veggies as well) just to feel the hungry crowd. According to the 'see how well smoked this meat is' lesson I got from Brandon everything matched the perfection of the weather (well, some of the chicken needed a bit more microwaving but the brisket was unequaled!). All who came were fed, with some going back multiple times. The potluck-everything-else that went along with the meat, stretched just as far as it needed to go. In the end I think we had about 65 people (plus a passel of kids). It came off without the hint of a hitch.... thanks mostly to the weather and its ultimate cooperation with my prayers.
