Going South

Last weekend I had the great opportunity to fly down to London and meet up with my old roommate Melanie Smith Sanders. We figure we haven't seen each other in about 16 years. We figured this because I remember her son as a two year old and he is now 6' 6" tall and about to turn 18! Anyway, you can imagine the chatter as we got in the car!

Mel, her husband David and the two kids Nick and Ranell were over here to visit David's Mom and celebrate her 80th birthday with a big family reunion. While Joy and her husband Gordon live just outside London they had rented a big Victorian house in Lynton, Devon to accommodate the 22 or so expected family members for a week's family reunion. Here's just a few pictures of Lynton:

In the front yard of the town museum. Lynmouth is the little harbor town at the bottom of the hill.

Typical jumble of an English village. Made popular as a seaside destination get away during Victorian times.

The town hall - impressive.

A few little cottages on the main street now B&B's.

The big local hotel. Guess Mary Shelley and crew liked to stay here until too many people discovered their secret get away and they had to find another quiet place to be creative.

The house rented for the family reunion is hard to see. Above the orange car in the parking lot is a small modern white house. Go the the very left of that roof line and then up a bit and you'll see the outline of a four story house. It's about one room deep but four stories tall and tucked into the cliff side like the two large houses above it. That was ours.

This picture taken from the top of the parking lot looking up the hill gives you a better idea of the steep hill we were nestled on (or rather clinging to).

A view from our front porch down across the valley to Lynmouth, the town at the bottom of the gorge.
