Thursday musings

I have a poster board up on the wall of my kitchen that is becoming famous among friends. On it are quotes from movies, books, talks, etc but the thing that I find most interesting are the quotes made by friends. All these quotes remind me of a specific space, people and/or time. They bring back dinner parties, long lost relationships and, often times, give me hope or encouragement all over again.

It started, I think, at a party where someone said something so odd that we all laughed until we cried. I wanted to remember not only what they said but how the whole evening felt. I didn't want to put in on a small piece of paper or tuck it away in my calendar. I couldn't write it on the wall since I was renting the place. Instead I pulled out the poster board, tacked it to the wall and everyone helped me remember the exact words of the quote.

Well the board is almost full now and I'm moving to the UK in 5 months. It won't fit in my suitcase so I'm wondering if I should start a new one in Scotland or cut up this one into puzzle pieces and take it with me.

The quote at the center of the board was put there for a reason. I found it while reading a book on women travelers. The woman writer was about to start off on a grand adventure when she said, "Courage is fear that has said it's prayers." Every day I try to follow in her footsteps and turn my fear into something much more useful. If I have to leave the poster at home its sayings will still go with me!!!
