Liz came to visit!

Liz Lyons came up from Edingurgh today for a visit. We walked all over town - which didn't take that long. I showed her my room (dormish place where I sleep) and my office where I will do most of my work. And then we went to the cathedral or the ruins of the cathedral. We spent more time walking the grounds and the graveyard than we had walking through town. At one time the Cathedral was the largest structure in what is now the UK but that was back in its heyday around the mid 1400's or so. Liz has got all those pictures on her camera.

On the way back to my dorm we discovered not one but two weddings going on at St. Savador's church. Liz's camera battery had died so we ran to get mine. Here are a few of the images I captured. We had a lovely older lady sitting on the bench with us as we waited for the wedding party to exit. She gave us a running commentary on the dress, kilts and other Scots etiquette we weren't quite up on.

There are hats and then there are hats! I believe this hat was being shown around by the mother of the bride.
And while the bridesmaids looked more lovely than most they were actually freezing!

Even the littlest kilts were cute!

And occasionally needed a hand with the particulars.

Then there were the women
Inappropriate heels for the cobblestones; amazingly short skirts; and shivering for the sake of fashion that didn't truly show off her assets to the best advantage.
As in the wild, men always come off as 'best dressed.'

Even in a kilt Scottish men look more handsome, dignified and masculine than most other men I know.

OK, not all Scottish men... ;-)
maybe he was English and just dressing up for the day.

And then there was the piper. He piped the new Mr & Mrs out of the church and across the quadrangle to the reception.

Liz was great and came with me to the Divinity School opening BBQ. I only really knew one or two other people but we had a nice time and chatted for a few hours and then we came home and Liz loaded some of these pictures on facebook page. Then we went out and got some dinner and headed to the busstop so she could make her way back to Edinburgh. We parted with a promise that I would come down and visit here sometime soon. Something fun to look forward to. YEAH!!!!

  1. Hiya Beth! Not to be too much of a stickler, but there's no "S" on the end of my last name.

My darling father has taught me to be proud of my last name and in its correct spelling; during law school, he had a professor whose last name was also Lyon (without the S), and the professor had said he went through the phonebook and there were only a fraction of people with the surname "Lyon," opposed to the more common "Lyons."

I think the story had a bigger point to make when my dad was telling it to me... but just so ya know!
